2. Terms & Conditions ~ Puppy Classes & Dog Training
Your instructor, Radica Raeves of The Mindful Dog, adheres to Steven R. Lindsay’s “Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive” guidelines, also referred to as the L.I.M.A principle. This scientifically based training principle is also supported by the renowned industry body, the IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants).
Class sizes are kept small in order to provide individual tuition and a relaxed learning environment (e.g. 6 puppies max. / puppy class). Classes are designed to be fun and rewarding for both dog and owner, but in the interest of safety, responsibility and welfare it is important that the following terms and conditions are noted.
Harsh handling by means of mental or physical intimidation, force or physical punishment is not permitted in our puppy classes or during our private dog training sessions. This behaviour will also be discouraged by educating dog owners and guardians about the why and how of using more appropriate, less invasive options.
2. Health & Safety, Hygiene & Equipment
All puppies attending Puppy Class need to have had their 1st puppy booster vaccination for Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus (= C3 DHP - this should have been given by the breeder’s Veterinarian when your puppy was between 6 and 8 weeks old).
All dogs attending dog training classes need to be up-to-date with their C5 vaccinations (C3 DHP + annual Kennel Cough vaccine for Bordatella, Parainfluenza).
Your instructor will request to sight a copy of your puppy or dog’s most recent vaccination certificate prior to commencing class.
Please note: We do not consider homeopathic nosodes an acceptable alternative to conventional vaccines for young puppies or dogs. We do however accept a written confirmation by your Veterinarian with regards to a recent titre test (min. 14 days prior to class start date) that your dog is currently still adequately immunised as per the commonly required C5 vaccines.
Your puppy or dog also should have received regular and timely parasite treatments for worms, fleas and ticks. This is for the safety of your puppy and others, therefore no exceptions can be made.
You will be requested to present a copy of your puppy’s most recent vaccination certificate prior to entering class.
If a puppy or dog is unable to attend classes, owners are more than welcome to attend without their dog in order to keep up to date with the training course.
Please DO NOT bring your puppy or dog to group classes if he or she has:
- been in contact with another dog infected with a contagious disease
- been diagnosed by a Vet with a contagious disease
- if your puppy shows any signs of: runny eyes, runny nose, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy,
skin lesions or rashes
- come into season (a female dog in heat)
Please always contact your Veterinarian for any health related issues!
All puppies and dogs must remain ON LEAD AT ALL TIMES and be kept away from making contact with any other puppies or dogs whilst at the venue and during class, unless specifically requested otherwise by your instructor.
Although we make every effort to allow your puppy to play with other suitable puppies in the class for short periods, we cannot guarantee the right mix of puppies on every course for this to be done safely. Consequently, puppy play may not occur in all classes.
We make every effort to ensure safety of both clients and puppies during the classes. By enrolling, you are accepting that participating in an activity with puppies, dogs, children and adults poses a potential risk of injury to yourself and your puppy, and you agree to indemnify your instructor, Radica Raeves of The Mindful Dog, for all personal injury and damage to property owned by you while attending the training classes. You also agree to make any person who accompanies you to the class aware that they are also there at their own risk.
All instances of accident or injury must be reported to the instructor, immediately, at the time they occurred.
Our chosen venue abides by the strictest hygiene standards and uses a industry grade, veterinary hospital disinfectant (F10), to clean the training venue, in order to create a safe and sanitised environment for both dogs and humans.
Owners are expected to clean up after their dogs in and around the training venue. Please ensure you come to class suitably prepared with poo bags to clean up any dog mess.
Equipment REQUIRED during puppy classes or private dog training sessions:
- A regular, fabric or leather lead (120 - 180 cm length).
- A regular buckle collar (for young puppies under the age of 16 weeks).
- A half-check martingale training collar (for safety - for adolescent puppies and adult dogs who have cleverly learnt to slip their regular collar).
- A dog treat pouch filled with a mixed supply of soft, smelly food treats - cut into small pieces (appropriate for the size of your puppy).
- e.g. hot-dogs, Frankfurter, cooked ham, cooked chicken fillet, BBQ chicken fillet, small cheese cubes etc.
- Your own supply of dog tidy poo bags.
- Please wear closed footwear.
The following equipment is NOT PERMITTED:
- Harnesses of all types, as they are less effective for our training purposes and are sometimes dangerous during play. Exceptions can only be made where a harness has been recommended by your Veterinarian for health reasons or at the specific request of your instructor. If used for health reasons, please supply a letter from your Veterinarian as to the nature of the puppy or dog’s condition, since this may also be relevant to various exercises in class.
- Head collars (head-halti, gentle leader), as they are less effective for our training purpose and can cause injury to the young puppy or dog’s neck and spine.
- Flexi leads, chain leads, slip leads and show leads are not permitted in class as they are not effective for our training purposes. Flexi leads in particular, can cause serious injury to handlers and others (from burns to severed fingers), they can also cause neck and spinal injuries to your puppy or dog; and are quite frankly, utterly inappropriate for teaching loose lead walking.
- Physical punishment-based training collars such as: check/choke chains, pinch/prong collars and all type of electronic collars are not permitted.
- Any other device that causes discomfort, pain or fear, or which the instructor deems inappropriate or unacceptable.
Our class program is designed to be attended in chronological order (Week 1, Week 2, Etc.), rather than a roll-on/roll-off programme or random attendance. Therefore, missed classes cannot be taken by joining another group run by your instructor at another time, as there may not be a spot available, and it is always disruptive to the other group to have an unfamiliar puppy join half-way through the course. For optimum results, please attend all your class sessions and complete your course in chronological order.
Occasionally, we may find that a class environment does not suit a puppy or owner. Full discussion over the best way to proceed will be undertaken and this may result in us making alternative arrangements to assist you.
To make the most of the classes and achieve optimal results, many short daily training sessions at home are favourable to allow you and your puppy to practice the techniques and lessons prior to the next class.
Owners, family members and dog guardians:
The Mindful Dog does not restrict the number of family members that are allowed to class (the more the merrier) and children are more than welcome. However, all children must be under the supervision of a responsible adult, who must agree to prevent them from disturbing the process of learning during the class. Children under the age of 5 may attend only if a second adult also attends, in order to enable one adult to concentrate on the child and the other on the puppy.
We encourage older children to attend our classes as we consider this to be in the best interest of all puppies attending. Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and should not be left to bring the dog to classes on their own.
Instructors reserve the right to request that disruptive children, adults or dogs not attend future classes.
