2. Terms & Conditions ~ Puppy Classes & Dog Training
Your instructor, Radica Raeves of The Mindful Dog, adheres to Steven R. Lindsay’s “Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive” guidelines, also referred to as the L.I.M.A principle. This scientifically based training principle is supported in the respective position statements of the following, highly respected, industry organisations: IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers).
Class sizes are kept to a minimum (8 maximum) to provide individual tuition and a relaxed environment. Classes are designed to be fun and rewarding for both dog and owner but in the interest of safety, responsibility and welfare it is important that the following terms and conditions are noted.
Harsh handling by means of mental or physical intimidation, force or physical punishment is not permitted in our puppy classes or during our private dog training sessions. This behaviour will also be discouraged by educating dog owners and guardians about the why and how of using more appropriate, less invasive options.
Health & Safety, Hygiene & Equipment
All puppies attending Puppy Class should have at least had their first puppy booster vaccination (normally given between 6 and 8 weeks of age by the breeder), and have received regular and timely worm, flea and tick treatments. A recent copy of your puppy's vaccination records will be requested (to be sighted) by your instructor prior to commencing class. This is for the safety of your puppy and others, therefore no exceptions can be made.
Please do not bring your puppy to class if he or she has been in contact with another dog infected by a contagious disease, or if puppy shows any signs of: lethargy, runny eyes, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhoea, skin lesions that don't seem to heel. Consult your Veterinarian for medical health issues.
All puppies must remain on lead at all times and be kept away from making contact with any other puppies whilst at the venue and during class, unless specifically requested otherwise by your instructor.
Although we make every effort to allow your puppy to play with other suitable puppies in the class for short periods, we cannot guarantee the right mix of puppies on every course for this to be done safely. Consequently, puppy play may not occur in all classes.
We make every effort to ensure safety of both clients and puppies during the classes. By enroling, you are accepting that participating in an activity with puppies, children and adults poses a potential risk of injury to yourself and your puppy, and you agree to indemnify your instructor, Radica Raeves of The Mindful Dog, for all personal injury and damage to property owned by you while attending the training classes. You also agree to make any person who accompanies you to the class aware that they are also there at their own risk.
All instances of accident or injury must be reported to your instructor, immediately, at the time they occurred, in order to provide the appropriate assistance and to comply with any insurance requirements.
Our chosen venue abides by the strictest hygiene standards and uses a veterinary grade disinfectant (F10) to clean the puppy class area, in order to create a safe and sanitised environment for your puppy.
Owners are expected to clean up after their dogs in and around the training venue. Please ensure you come to class suitably prepared with poo bags to clean up any dog mess.
Equipment required during puppy classes or private dog training sessions:
- a regular, fabric or leather lead (120 - 180 cm length)
- a regular buckle collar
- only if suggested by your instructor: a half-check martingale training collar
(for adolescent puppies and adult dogs who have cleverly learnt to slip their regular collars)
- a dog treat pouch filled with a mixed supply of soft, smelly food treats - cut into small pieces (appropriate for the size of your puppy).
e.g. hot-dogs, Frankfurter, Cabanossi, cooked ham, cooked chicken fillet, BBQ chicken fillet, small cheese cubes etc.
- your own supply of dog tidy poo bags
The following equipment is NOT PERMITTED:
- Harnesses of all types, as they are not effective for our training purposes and are sometimes dangerous during play.
Exceptions can only be made where a harness has been recommended by your veterinarian for health reasons. In these cases, it would be useful for owners to supply a letter from their veterinarian as to the nature of the puppy’s condition, since this may be relevant to various exercises in class, such as puppy play.
- Head collars (head-halti, gentle leader), as they are less effective for our training purposes and can cause injury to the young puppy or dog’s neck and spine.
- Flexi leads, chain leads, slip leads and show leads are not permitted in class as they are not effective for our training purposes, and Flexi leads in particular can cause injury to handlers and others.
- Physical punishment-based training collars, aimed to cause discomfort or pain, such as: check/choke chains, pinch/prong collars and all type of electronic collars are not permitted during group class or private training sessions.
- Any other devices that could cause discomfort, pain or fear, or which the instructor deems inappropriate or unacceptable.
Our Puppy Class courses consist of 4 weekly, 1.5 hour sessions, rather than a roll-on/roll-off programme or random attendance. Therefore, missed classes cannot be taken by joining another group. Not only may there not be a spot available, but especially, an unfamiliar puppy joining another group part-way is always disruptive. For optimum results, please attend all your class sessions and complete your course work in chronological order.
Occasionally, we may find that a class environment does not suit a puppy or owner. Full discussion over the best way to proceed will be undertaken and this may result in us making alternative arrangements to assist you.
To make the most of the classes and achieve optimal results, many short daily training sessions at home are favourable to allow you and your puppy to practice the techniques and lessons prior to the next class.
Owners, family members and dog guardians:
The Mindful Dog does not restrict the number of family members that are allowed to class (the more the merrier) and children are more than welcome. However, all children must be under the supervision of a responsible adult, who must agree to prevent them from disturbing the process of learning during the class. Children under the age of 5 may attend only if a second adult also attends, in order to enable one adult to concentrate on the child and the other on the puppy.
We encourage older children to attend our classes as we consider this to be in the best interest of all puppies attending. Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and should not be left to bring the dog to classes on their own.
Instructors reserve the right to ask disruptive children not to attend future classes.
Puppies & Dogs:
Only puppies under the age of 16 weeks on the start date of the course will be accepted.
All puppies attending Puppy Class should have at least had their first puppy booster vaccination (normally given between 6 and 8 weeks of age by the breeder), and have received regular and timely worm, flea and tick treatments. This is for the safety of your puppy and others, therefore no exceptions can be made. It is your responsibility to have your puppy vaccinated. Please do not bring your puppy to class if he or she has been in contact with another dog infected by a contagious disease. (NB: We do not consider homeopathic nosodes an acceptable alternative to conventional vaccines for young puppies.)
Adult dogs attending classes or private dog training need to be fully vaccinated and up-to-date with boosters, worm, flea and tick treatments. We also ask that bitches in season are not brought to class. If you are unsure whether or not to bring your dog to class please do not hesitate to call The Mindful Dog or speak with your Veterinarian. If a dog is unable to attend classes, owners are more than welcome to attend without their dog in order to keep up to date with the training course.
Bookings, Cancellations & Refunds
When time allows before the start of the first class session, we will email the client confirmation of their enrolment. This will confirm payment status, start date and time, and provide any other useful information pertinent to their enrolment.
The enrolment confirmation email, confirms the client will attend the 4 week Puppy Class course. The client is expected to make every effort to attend each week. If the client is unable to attend, they are responsible for informing their instructor as soon as possible.
It is the client’s responsibility to ensure they attend on the correct date, time and place for the classes according to the details provided by the instructor.
The full course fee must be paid in advance of before joining the class, by a method accepted by your Puppy Class instructor (Cash or EFT - Electronic Funds Transfer). Price advertised at time of booking applies.
Failure to pay in advance will result in you being refused entry to join class and/or losing your spot to another client.
Failure to attend a course that you have booked a place on, but not yet paid for, will result in a request for full payment, which you agree to be fully liable.
All cancellations need to be given at least 7 DAYS PRIOR TO THE START DATE of your course.
Because we operate our classes using a very low instructor ~ puppy ratio, refunds for cancellations within 7 days of the start date of the course, will only be granted if your spot can be filled by another client.
Refunds will not be granted once the course has started. There will be no partial refunds for missed classes. No exceptions.
